Imperial Debuts Mobile Pay-at-the-Pump at 15 Stations in Canada

CALGARY, Alberta — Imperial Oil Ltd. is the first major Canadian retailer to offer a mobile pay-at-the-pump solution. The Calgary-based company added the Speedpass+ smartphone app at 15 Esso gas stations in the greater Halifax region of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

Integrated with Esso’s loyalty programs, the Speedpass+ app allows customers to link their loyalty card and earn Esso Extra points or loyalty Aeroplan Miles on qualifying purchases.

“Imperial is committed to innovation and technology and recognizes that smartphones have become integral to our customers’ lives. The Speedpass+ app is designed to save customers time at the pump while providing valuable loyalty rewards,” said Andrew Mackay, retail fuels manager, Imperial. “With more than 67 percent of Canadians owning a smartphone, the Speedpass+ app aims to transform the fueling experience at Esso service stations by offering convenient payment options.”

At the 15 Halifax-area convenience stores, customers who download and use the app to purchase at least 35 liters of fuel three times will earn a $10 Esso Gift Card. Once the user accepts the reward, the value of the card will be automatically loaded to the app.

The Speedpass+ mobile payment app is available for free download on iPhone and Android smartphones, and can be linked to major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard and American Express, as well as Esso Gift Cards. In addition, customers can obtain receipts by email, at the pump or both.

Imperial Oil plans to roll out the Speedpass+ mobile pay-at-the-pump solution to all of its Canadian locations later this year.

Imperial Oil Ltd.’s history dates back to 1880. In 1898, Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, now known as Exxon Mobil Corp., acquired a majority stake in the company.
