VGA Elects Officers, Presents Awards

The Vermont Grocers' Association's annual trade show and exhibition culminated last week with the appointment of a new chairman and an awards ceremony.

The association elected Tom Mehuron of Waitsfield, Vt.-based Mehuron's Market as its new chairman. Steve Clayton of Shelburne Supermarket will serve as vice chairman during the upcoming year, while Gail Horne of South, Hero-based Keelers Bay Variety will become the organization's new secretary-treasurer.

Vermont operators and suppliers also recognized Bob George, owner of Newport, Vt.-based RJ's Friendly Market Inc., for his involvement with the community, excellence in operations and contributions to the local food industry by honoring him with the title of "Retailer of the Year."

"We are very pleased to see Bob George recognized with this award," said Jim Harrison, VGA president. "The fact that he paid tribute to his employees when accepting the award speaks volumes about how he operates his business on a daily basis."

Frito Lay was also honored as "Supplier of the Year" during the ceremony. Outgoing chairman Doug Tschorn praised the company, saying "their products and service are excellent."

The statewide association, formed in 1934, represents over 750 convenience store and supermarket operators and has more than 160 industry supplier members.
