Valero, Green Oil Support Communities

SAN ANTONIO -- Valero Energy Corp. recently partnered with the University of Texas at San Antonio (USTA) Inclusion and Community Engagement Center for a new program for students -- Valero Volunteer University, the USTA Today reported.

Through the program, undergraduate students with a 2.25 GPA or higher (3.0 for graduate students) can volunteer at Valero Volunteer events, including the Valero MS 150 Bike to the Beach, Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl For Kid's Sake. Then, university students can join the Leadership Track by completing eight hours of service with Valero each semester, the report stated.

Those students who reach the Leadership Track service requirement are eligible for $2,500 in scholarships and other awards, the report stated. The student organization that contributes the most hours to the program period will be awarded $500 to the charity of its choice or to fund a campuswide activity, according to the report.

In other charitable news, Fairburn, Ga.-based distributor Geo. H. Green Oil raised more than $30,000 for three local charities and the Juvenile Diabetes Research fund in less than a month through five company-operated stores, its office staff and a $1,000 donation form its dealer organization, the company stated.

The project began Thanksgiving Day, and has raised more than $1,000 per day, surpassing the goal of $25,000, according to the company.

"Through the outstanding efforts of the Greenway Stores, office employees and with exceptional vendor and customer support, some 1,400 underprivileged children will wake up Christmas morning having been visited by Santa and Atlanta's Empty Stocking Organization," Green Oil marketing director Jim Callahan said in a statement.

Other charities that will benefit from the donation include the women's shelter Welcome House and In His Great Name Ministry.

"While it was indeed a total team effort, every team has a leader and our Fairburn Family travel Center and its magnificent employees paved the road to success, by raising approximately 50 percent of the grand total," he said.

"We are so proud and grateful for the efforts and success of each and every member of our team -- they exceeded a goal that we thought would be extremely difficult to achieve. Our group tries very hard to follow the mandates and leadership of our owners, but raising funds for such a good causes makes it that much more fun and exciting -- they indeed feel the reason for the season," Callahan said.
