Stewart's Shops Seeks Restitution

MALTA, N.Y. -- William Stack, a former data processing manager for Stewart's Shops Corp., has been accused by his former employer of embezzling more than $4 million in company funds between 1985 and November, 2002.

The Associated Press this morning reported that Stewart's has filed suit against Stack, seeking full restitution and punitive damages. According to the lawsuit, Stack approved payments for fake vendor invoices for computer paper bought from a company in Clifton Park, N.Y., near the 300 store chain's headquarters in nearby Malta, N.Y. He is accused of using the money to buy expensive cars and homes in Saratoga and Vermont.

State police are currently investigating the case, although Stack has not yet been charged with any crime.
