NACS Launches Internship in Memory of Teri Richman

SAN FRANCISCO -- NACS established an ongoing internship program honoring Teri Richman to "perpetuate her passion for growing young talent, exploring new ideas and bettering our industry."

At the NACS Leadership Forum here last week, Rutter's CEO Scott Hartman gave a touching tribute to Richman, who joined NACS in 1982 as the association's first in-house federal lobbyist and played a critical role in developing NACS' advocacy, research and technology efforts. Richman died of pancreatic cancer late last year at the age of 54.

Over the course of her 20-plus years at NACS, Richman was involved in nearly every major industry issue and initiative, from defeating beer-gas bans in the mid-1980s and improving store security in the late '80s, to introducing technology standards in the mid-1990s. She was also a tireless worker who led the fight against credit card fees with the founding of the Merchants Payments Coalition in 2005.

Hartman also noted Richman's interest in mentoring and growing people within the convenience store industry. "To celebrate that spirit, NACS has established the Teri Richman internship program as a self-sustaining program open to deserving undergraduate and graduate students," he said, adding Rutter's has already contributed $2,500 toward the program, along with a matching grant from one of its vendor partners.
