Kroger Stores Take On a Pink Hue

CINCINNATI -- Pink tags are on display throughout The Kroger Co.'s family of stores again this year, as the retailer announced it is continuing to partner with its vendors and suppliers to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

Beginning this past weekend, pink tags could be found on Kroger stores' shelves, identifying participating products customers can purchase to support breast cancer awareness in their community. Several of Kroger's vendor partners have created special packaging to support the campaign, and six Kroger employees who are breast cancer survivors share their experiences on specially marked Kellogg products.

"This cause is important to our customers and associates, and we are honored to do our part to provide support to help educate women about early detection, diagnosis and treatment," Kroger chairman and CEO David B. Dillon said in a statement.

Participating vendors include: Campbell's; Coca-Cola's Powerade and Minute Maid brands; General Mills products under the Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and Green Giant labels; and Kraft products. Many of Kroger's own corporate brand items, including several products under its exclusive Private Selection line, will also have pink tags.

Kroger and its vendor partners have committed to raise $2.5 million during the campaign to support breast cancer research and awareness in communities across the country where Kroger customers and associates live and work, the retailer said.

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Kroger is one of the nation's largest retail grocery chains. At the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2007, the company operated (either directly or through its subsidiaries) 2,491 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two dozen local banners. Kroger also operated (directly or through subsidiaries, franchise agreements or operating agreements) 780 convenience stores, 406 fine jewelry stores, 664 supermarket fuel centers and 42 food processing plants.
