CEFCO Deploying VeriFone’s EMV-Ready Platform

TEMPLE, Texas — Fikes Wholesale Inc. selected Verifone Inc.’s Commander Site Controller and Ruby2 POS solutions for its entire chain of 227 CEFCO locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Verifone solutions allow CEFCO to be EMV compliant at the point-of-sale with the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) liability shift deadline coming Oct. 1. The rollout to CEFCO stores is currently underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

In addition, both technology solutions allows CEFCO to support EMV at the pump in time for the October 1, 2017 liability shift deadline at the forecourt, stated Verifone.

“Our goal is to standardize and consolidate our payment systems with a solution that gives our entire chain of CEFCO stores the most efficient path to EMV acceptance,” said H. Lorne Brockway, vice president of information technology for Fikes. “Verifone’s partnership will enable us to not only support EMV in time for the liability shift deadlines, but also improve our store management capabilities and expand our use of the solution in the future.”

Retailers are not required to upgrade their POS devices by Oct. 1. However, those who don’t may be held financially responsible for fraudulent credit card and debit card transactions. Credit card and debit card purveyors are currently financially responsible for these transactions.

In coordination with the EMV liability shift deadline, consumers are receiving chip-and-PIN and chip-and-signature debit cards and credit cards.

“Merchants in all verticals are challenged by the migration to EMV as well as the rapidly changing payment technology landscape,” said Dan Yienger, senior vice president of petroleum for Verifone. “Fikes’ forward-thinking approach to payments will simplify and expedite its move to EMV, while at the same time putting in place a flexible, standardized payment system that is easy to use and can grow with future business needs.”

San Jose, Calif.-based Verifone has clients and partners in more than 150 countries, including the well-known retail brands, financial institutions and payment providers.

Temple-based Fikes is a group of six family business units. In additional to its 227 convenience stores, the company supplies fuel to commercial and retail accounts throughout the United States via relationships with Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, CITGO, Valero and several independent fuel suppliers.
