Berkeley, Calif., Home to Public Biofuel Station

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The San Francisco Bay area will see the first public biodiesel-only station in the nation when it opens here this summer, The Associated Press reported.

Biofuel Oasis will have four solar-powered, pay-at-the-pump dispensers that will offer only biodiesel. Air and water hoses, a convenience store that sells organic lemonade and extended hours will be other features of the location.

Currently, customers in the area seeking biodiesel have had to wait as long as an hour to fill up at the company’s single pump located at its warehouse in West Berkeley, Calif., or drive to a membership co-op in San Francisco during its limited operation hours, the report stated.

"We think this is going to bring biodiesel to a whole new level," Melissa Hardy, Biofuel Oasis co-owner, told the AP. "Although we like to think of this as the anti-gas station."

The area does host about a dozen other biofuel suppliers, but the majority are collectives that require members to work a few hours per month and are open limited hours.

Biofuel Oasis, a for-profit, worker-owned business, is operated by six women and will sell biodiesel to "anyone who pulls up," Hardy added.
