Appco Raises $20,000 for Cancer Research

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. -- Fast cars and long drives spiced up this year's Appco Charity Golf Classic, held May 20 at Graysburg Hills Golf Course in Chuckey, Tenn.

This year's field of 188 golfers raised $20,000 for cancer research in the tri-state region Appco Convenience Stores operate. Busch Series driver David Green and Long Drive Champion Gerry James were on hand at the event to help in the fundraising efforts. Appco sponsors Green's No. 37 Timberwolf car when the team competes in both the spring and fall races at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"This is our second year for the Classic, and we've doubled the donation to the Cancer Society, something of which the Appco family is very proud," said Danny Blackburn, president of Appco Convenience Centers. "Our vendors and employees are instrumental in helping us give back to the communities which have been so very good to us."

This is the second year Appco has selected the American Cancer Society as the beneficiary of its tournament, after raising 10,000 last year. Since the company's convenience stores are located throughout Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia, each state's regional chapter will share in the award. Jeff Benedict, president of Appalachian Oil Co., and Sara McLean, whose grandfather founded the company and whose father is still active in its operations, presented the check to representatives from the American Cancer Society.
