7-Eleven CEO Receives McLane Business Leadership Award

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – 7-Eleven President and CEO Joe DePinto received the 2012 McLane Leadership in Business Award from the Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics, and Public Policy at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University on Oct. 2, the university announced. The annual award recognizes a prominent figure in private business for outstanding contributions at the national level to to business, public service or community service.

Attendees at the ceremony included Drayton McLane III, son of the award's namesake; Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin; George Bush Presidential Library Foundation CEO Frederick McClure; and more than 120 others. Bush School Acting Dean Andrew Card provided the welcome, followed by remarks from Dr. James Griffin and an introduction from Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin; and George Bush Presidential Library Foundation CEO Frederick McClure, according to the report.

DePinto spoke about using servant leadership to create positive change in corporate culture using his experience at 7-Eleven as an example. After accepting the award, he joined A. Dale Thompson, CEO of Leadership Worth Following LLC, in a conversation on leadership.

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to hear from one of today's most dynamic and innovative leaders," said second-year Bush School student Michael Hardy. "Mr. DePinto's success is marked by his ability to think outside the box on some of today's most difficult challenges, and he is a great example for the students at the Bush School to follow."

In addition to his position at 7-Eleven, DePinto serves on a variety of corporate and nonprofit boards and advisory councils. His executive experience includes time at PepsiCo and Thornton Oil Co.

The McLane Award highlights the different roles business plays in maintaining the vitality of the nation, to educate youth and the public about corporate citizenship, and to instill in them a dedication to public service, according to the university. It is named after Drayton McLane, Jr., Chairman of the McLane Group, a strong supporter of the Bush School who is a member of the Bush School Advisory Board and serves as chairman of the Bush School's capital campaign.
