VIDEO: Examining Employee Engagement in Convenience Stores

3/7/2016

ATLANTA — The North America NACS Council of the Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council (CCRRC) just released the first video in a six-part series that speaks to the importance of employee engagement and provides convenience store retailers with insights they can use in their own stores.

The video series, titled “Power Up Employee Engagement: A Flash of Light.” is a lead-up to a major quantitative study, which will be released in June.

Working with Bill Bishop, chief architect of the retail consultancy Brick Meets Click, the new CCRRC study includes a series of videotaped interviews with district and regional c-store managers talking about how improved employee engagement improved their businesses.

“Retailers know that competition for good people is picking up and that people are the primary brand ambassadors of their brand to customers,” Bishop noted in an interview with CSNews Online. “Ensuring employees feel valued is an important, affordable way to achieve a good reputation, and we know there is a business return as well.”

Additionally, workforce expectations are changing and how people treat each other at work in increasingly important, particularly to younger employees. Bishop pointed out that a positive workplace culture leads to both increased sales and improved profitability.

A new video will be released weekly. Each video will take viewers through the steps for improving employee engagement in their convenience store.

In the first video, various district and regional managers from convenience stores across North America talk about how they learned their actions were hindering employee engagement, and discuss their commitment to change.

“In each video, you begin to feel the benefits that a regional or district manager begins to appreciate as they increase their engagement with their employees,” said Bishop. “As you go through the video, you actually hear an epiphany as these people become believers in fostering better engagement.”

In addition to the video series, a narrated PowerPoint about the power of employee engagement by Dr. Blake Frank, management professor at the University of Dallas, will be available in April.
