Cumberland Farms Marks SmartPay Milestone With Gas Giveaway

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Cumberland Farms gave one free year of gas to Kenneth Hobart of Wilmington, Mass., on Oct. 15 to celebrate reaching $1 billion in gas sold via the convenience store chain's SmartPay mobile app since its January 2013 launch.

Hobart, a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, was fueling up at the Cumberland Farms store in Wilmington when the brand reached the milestone. The SmartPay Check-Link program is available as both a payment card and a mobile payment app and is free to join and use. With SmartPay, customers automatically save 10 cents on every gallon of gas. Hobart estimated that he has fueled up with the app more than 100 times over the last two years.

"I'm so thankful for Cumberland Farms' generosity and I'm a huge fan of the app. You just can't beat the convenience — you pull up to the pump, type in your pump number and you're on your way to filling your tank," said Hobart. "I have a car, three motorcycles and a diesel motor home, so I stop for gas as often as two to three times a day, depending on the weather and what I'm driving. With this gift from Cumberland Farms, I don't need to worry about the cost of gas, and I'm going to kick it off by filling up my motor home for a trip I have coming up next week to Alabama."

Cumberland Farms held a check presentation on Friday, Oct. 16 at the Wilmington store, located at 205 Main Street. The 9 a.m. presentation was open to the public.

"We wanted to celebrate the $1 billion SmartPay milestone, and we are thrilled that the person pumping gas at that moment is such a dedicated and loyal SmartPay user," said David Heilbronner, senior manager of brand strategy at Cumberland Farms. "We hope he enjoys lots of great motor home and bike trips on Cumberland Farms over the coming year."

Framingham-based Cumberland Farms Inc. operates nearly 600 convenience stores in the Northeast and Florida.
