N.C. Legislature to Discuss Capping Gas Tax Before Automatic Increase

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina House of Representatives Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Cornelius) has called on the legislature to discuss proposing changing the state's gasoline tax this week, according to a MyFox8 report. A three-day work session is scheduled for the legislature this week.

The state's gas tax is currently 35 cents per gallon and regularly adjusted every six months. The next adjustment is scheduled for January 2012, when the tax is projected to increase by four cents per gallon. While some lawmakers have suggested capping the tax, according to the report, such a change would require the approval of both the House and the Senate.

North Carolina's gas tax, reportedly one of the highest in the U.S., supports road maintenance in the state. The Legislature held floor sessions on Sunday but held no votes.
