Wawa Set to Break Ground in Southwest Florida

July 15 ceremony will kick off construction of first three stores.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Wawa Inc. will begin its move into southwest Florida on July 15 when officials break ground on its first location here, according to a News-Press report.

The event, which is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. at the site near the intersection of Colonial Boulevard and Fowler Street, will celebrate the construction of Wawa's first three stores in the region. Lee County Commissioners Brian Hamman and Cecil Pendergrass and Wawa executives will don hard hats and take up shovels at the ceremony.

The three stores set to begin construction are located at:

    • 12701 S. Cleveland Ave., South Fort Myers
    • 2370 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers
    • 761 Del Prado Blvd. N., North Fort Myers

Attendees of the kickoff ceremony will be able to sample Wawa products, view an oversized rendering of the future store's Florida market-specific design, and learn more about Wawa's plans for expansion and its expected economic impact on the area.

"We are thrilled to mark an important milestone in our expansion by breaking ground on the first three stores in Southwest Florida, marking our official entrance into Fort Myers, Fla.," stated Wawa President and CEO Chris Gheysens. "This significant step into a new region in the Sunshine State furthers our ability to invest in Florida, open new stores and create more jobs."

After the ceremony, Wawa will host an invitation-only Community Partnership Lunch at the Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers at 11 a.m. The lunch event is designed to give local officials, community members, and business and charity partners more information about Wawa's history, products, people and expected local economic impact. Company officials will discuss key milestones for store construction and opening dates in the Fort Myers and southwest Florida region.

Wawa currently operates 43 stores in Florida with 25 under construction and more under contract.
