Wal-Mart Expanding in Pennsylvania
MINERSVILLE, Pa. -- Wal-Mart has announced it will build a new distribution center near Minersville, Pa., to serve 130 stores in the Northeast with perishable goods. The 470,000-square-foot facility is slated to open late next year or in early 2005.
Wal-Mart officials said the center will be the company's first perishable-goods center in Pennsylvania, reports the Associated Press. It is one of nine the company is planning to build nationwide.
The distribution center will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the report. Almost 90 percent of the building will be refrigerated to temperatures between minus 20 degrees to 55 degrees. The center is expected to create 450 jobs over the next three years.
Wal-Mart also plans a 450,000-square-foot dry goods addition, officials said. The company currently has 50 stores, 43 supercenters and 20 Sam's Clubs in the state, and employs 40,000 people in Pennsylvania, according to the report.
