VP Nominee Holds Ties to C-store Industry

DENVER – During her speech at the Republican National Convention here earlier this week, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska and vice presidential nominee, voiced many of her views, including those on energy and small business.

In her remarks opposing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s plan to raise taxes for Americans and small businesses earning more than $25,000 annually, Palin revealed her sister and brother-in-law, Heather and Kurt Bruce, just built and opened a service station, "like millions of others who run small businesses. How are they going to be any better off if taxes go up?" she asked.

In an interview with NBC’s "Today Show," Heather Bruce backed up her sister’s statements, saying "She’s an advocate for us as small business owners. [Palin and her husband, Todd] had their small business at one time too, so they know the struggles that small business owners have. So I feel that I have an advocate for me and for other business owners in America now." A call to the Bruces was unreturned by press time. Later in her speech, Palin expressed the need to allow more drilling for oil.

"When a hurricane strikes in the Gulf of Mexico, this country should not be so dependent on imported oil that we are forced to draw from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve," she said. "We Americans need to produce more of our own oil and gas. And take it from a gal who knows the North Slope of Alaska: we've got lots of both."

She also criticized her opponents’ arguments that drilling will not solve all of the U.S. energy problems.

"As if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all," she said, adding that her campaign calls for more pipelines, nuclear plants, clean coal and alternative sources such as solar, wind and geothermal energy.
