Valero Raises More Than $1.6 Million To Benefit MDA

SAN ANTONIO -- Despite the economy, Valero raised $1,645,652 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2009 Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign, $312,000 more than last year's fund raising efforts.

More than 44,000 business sponsors participated in this years fundraising effort by selling $1 and $5 green Shamrocks mobiles through the month of March, Valero has been participating in the Shamrocks program since 1986 and 923 stores participated this year.

MDA's campaign broke records this year, raising $18 million. "Each year I tell myself, 'This has got to be it.' Then, the following year, I'm astounded to see that generosity driven by love and compassion has a greater capacity than I thought possible," MDA National Chairman Jerry Lewis said. "I'm humbled by this response."

"We're grateful to our partners for reaching out to their customers, for even a small donation," MDA President and CEO Gerald C. Weinberg. "The overwhelming generosity from the public for this great cause demonstrates that there is so much good in the world. We can't thank everyone enough."

Valero Energy Corp. has been participating in MDA's Shamrocks Against Dystrophy since 1986, with 923 stores selling Shamrocks this year.

Money raised through the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign is used for research for treatments and cures, support group sessions, clinic fees, MDA summer camp, and mobility and communication devices. Contributions stay in the local communities.
