Valero Closes Two Sites Near Supermarkets
SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Valero Energy Corp. pulled the plug on two of its branded stations near Albertsons supermarkets here this month, according to a report by GoSanAngelo.com.
"They didn't tell us anything," said William Barnes, store director of one of the Albertsons stores. "There are no cars over there, and the pumps are all shut off."
Aside from the proximity of the two gas stations and convenience stores, Albertsons has not had any part in the operations since Valero took ownership of the sites last year as part of a four-state deal with the grocery company.
The San Antonio-based oil refining and marketing company bought the two San Angelo sites from the grocer last summer. Valero also acquired 70 other Albertsons fueling kiosks and convenience stores throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arizona and Colorado, according to the GoSanAngelo.com report.
The gas pumps and convenience stores at the two Albertsons locations will be closed indefinitely, Valero spokesperson Bill Day said. He did not have exact figures on the number of employees who lost jobs, but said it amounts to "a handful."
Day told GoSanAngelo.com the company is not pulling out of San Angelo, and Valero will continue to own and maintain the fueling kiosks at the third Albertsons store in the city. However, Day said, Valero's purchase of the Albertsons gas stations in San Angelo was intended as a short-term move.
"Those locations are up for sale," he noted. "When Valero bought the 72 locations from Albertsons, those sites were included. They were smaller locations than we usually run. We're actively marketing those specific sites, and it's even possible that they won't be convenience stores or gas stations."
