Valero, Chevron Make Sizable Donations

BEAUMONT, Texas and Davis, Calif. -- Valero Energy Corp. and Chevron Corp. are in the spirit of giving back.

Raising money through a golf tournament, Valero refinery workers in Southeast Texas donated $100,000 to their nearby Shorkey Center, which helps people with special needs, reported local television station KFDM-TV News. The center's services include speech rehabilitation, therapy for children with autism and parental support.

Meanwhile in California, The University of California, Davis is getting a $2.5 million endowment from Chevron for a chair to head energy efficiency research, the Associated Press reported.

The new Energy Efficiency Center director will oversee research on energy efficiency technologies in buildings, agriculture and transportation. University chancellor Larry Vanderhoef explained the new director will be tasked with bridging academic research with real-world applications, the report stated.
