UPDATE: Exxon Worker Faces Criminal Charges in Police Standoff

PARAMUS, N.J. -- An Exxon employee who forced a police standoff today when he barricaded himself with a gun inside the oil company's office here will face criminal charges. However, it is still too early in the investigation to know how many charges and what exactly those charges will be, according to Paramus Police Chief Christopher J. Brock.

"We will now take it into the next phase of the investigation and find out why he did what he did," Brock said at a press conference this afternoon. "There will be criminal charges forthcoming, but until the investigation is complete, we are not quite sure what the charges will be in their entirety."

According to reports, Khalet Ringo, 63, holed himself up in the Exxon first-floor office at 13 Sunflower Ave. just before 11 a.m. today. He surrendered to police around 1:30 p.m., with no shots fired and no injuries reported. A Bergen County K-9 officer responding to the scene knew the suspect and was able to talk him into surrendering, Brock explained.

Ringo did not resist law enforcement when he gave himself up, but Brock said he "still seemed a little agitated." The negotiations with SWAT team negotiators were conducted verbally through the office door.

Brock said the suspect began working for Exxon as a gas station attendant, but it was not clear whether he was still in that position or moved up to another position. It was also unclear this afternoon if Ringo was still employed by Exxon.

Police are also still examining the gun Ringo brought with him to the office building. Brock said it appears to be a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, but that it does not look like to could fire traditional bullets. He said it is possible the weapon was a cap gun or pellet gun.
