Thorntons Makes Its Sunshine State Entrance

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Thorntons Inc.will open its first Florida convenience store here tomorrow morning. The new store, located at 1698 Gulf to Bay Blvd. in Clearwater, will open at 5 a.m.

According to Thorntons, the new location is the first of 15 to 20 new stores that will open in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area in the next three years.

In advance of its entrance into the Sunshine State, the c-store chain will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony tonight at 5 p.m. Members of the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce, Thorntons Chief Operating Officer Tony Harris, the Clearwater High School Jazz Band and Thorntons' mascots, Champ and Phil-UP; are all expected to be on hand at tonight's invitation-only celebration.

Thorntons originally planned to open its Florida c-store in the spring of 2013, but moved up the timetable in August. Its new Florida location will be open 24 hours a day.

Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons Inc. was founded by James H. Thornton in 1971 and currently operates 166 gasoline stations, convenience stores, car washes and travel plazas in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio Tennessee and Florida.
