Texans Support Tobacco Tax Increase

When it comes to increasing state taxes, Texans have an overwhelming opinion about where state revenue should come from.
A study at the University of Texas shows that while most Texans don't support raising gas or sales taxes, they do overwhelmingly support another kind of tax increase.
"About three out of four Texans support an increase in tobacco taxes to generate revenue for the state," said Dr. Jeannie Grussendorf, who spearheaded the study for the university. In contrast, only 19 percent of the 1,000 Texans surveyed said they prefer an increase in sales tax, and only 11 percent support a tax on gasoline.
