Sunoco Signs NASCAR Partnership

PHILADELPHIA, Pa -- Under a 10-year agreement, Sunoco will provide racing gasoline for NASCAR's three national series' -- the Winston Cup Series, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series -- starting with the 2004 season.

The company produces racing fuel at its refinery in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, and the main goal of the sponsorship is to persuade NASCAR fans to drive an extra mile to buy fuel at one of the 4,700 Sunoco gas stations.

"NASCAR fans are loyal to sponsors," said Robert W. Owens, senior vice president of marketing at Sunoco. He explained the company had not projected how much additional fuel would be sold because of the sponsorship.

Sunoco also has a new sponsorship deal with NASCAR involving its Aplus convenience stores, which could also help boost sales of consumer goods, according to Owens.

The company will replace ConocoPhillips' Unocal "76" brand, which has provided racing gasoline to competitors for decades.
