Shell Partners with Codexis On Biofuels

HOUSTON and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Shell Oil Products US and Codexis Inc., a private biotechnology company, will collaborate to develop enhanced methods of turning biomass into biofuels, according to a news release from Shell.

"Shell is committed to leading the development of second-generation biofuels that offer lower well-to-wheel CO2 production and enhanced performance," said David Sexton, president of Shell Oil Products US. "We are exploring the application of Codexis' proprietary technologies to produce alternative fuels from renewable, sustainable sources."

Shell has had a hand in developing biofuels for more than 30 years and sold approximately 800 million gallons of biofuels in 2005, mostly in the U.S. and Brazil. The company also markets fuels containing some sort of biological additive in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, the Philippines, Sweden and Thailand.

"Our proven biocatalytic approach should provide the critical pathway to developing economically-feasible alternative transportation fuels from renewable resources," said Alan Shaw, Codexis president and CEO. "We are pleased to be partnering with Shell, a world leader in energy, to undertake this important effort."

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
