Shell Oil Honors Football Legend
HOUSTON -- Shell Oil Co. honored the former National Football League's Dallas Cowboys running back and 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Emmitt Smith with its Shell Legacy Award at a dinner Tuesday evening celebrating the Shell Houston Open's legacy of charitable donations.
Presented by Tom Botts, executive vice president, global manufacturing for Shell Oil Co., the 2010 Shell Legacy Award recognized Smith for his contributions to charities across the United States, especially his efforts to help children. Smith has made it his personal goal to help underserved children realize their dreams by providing unique opportunities and experiences through the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, according to Shell.
"It is an honor and privilege to receive the Shell legacy award," Smith said. "In reality though, this award recognizes each and every individual whose life has improved and becomes a success story. So, my acceptance of this award is really recognition of every person who has reached a better life through the charities I support."
Botts added: "We are proud to recognize Emmitt Smith and his efforts to improve the lives of youths and families across the country. Mr. Smith is laying the foundation for a brighter future by giving disadvantaged individuals a chance to succeed. I admire that. His efforts truly reflect the Shell Houston Open's goal of providing a chance for children."
Since 1992, when Shell Oil Co. became the tournament's title sponsor, the Shell Houston Open has raised more than $50 million for local charities. Tuesday's dinner kicked off the 2010 Shell Houston Open, which runs April 1-4, at the Redstone Golf Club.
