Shell Hits the Road to Highlight Fuel Efficiency

HOUSTON -- To prove fuel efficiency is a possibility and not just an item on a wish list, Shell is launching a national Smarter Driving program aimed at helping drivers make the most of their fuel purchases and the nation’s natural resources.

To kick off the program, Shell has turned to John and Helen Taylor, the world's most fuel-efficient couple. The pair -- who holds 88 world records -- are embarking on a fuel efficiency tour from Los Angeles today. Their goal is to set another lowest fuel consumption record while driving exclusively with Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines along the way. The Taylors will be making several stops to share tips on how to be smarter drivers.

Shell and the Taylors will be promoting a MAP (Maintenance, Actions and Products) to Smarter Driving. Some recommendations include keeping the engine well-tuned and practicing smart driving behavior behind the wheel.

"Globally, the number of cars is set to increase from 700 million today to more than two billion by 2050, which means we need to make the most of our existing resources. At Shell, we have the technology to create smarter products for future generations of mobility," said Dan Little, North America fuels marketing manager for Shell Oil Products U.S. "As we focus on finding efficient ways to address the world mobility challenge, we want to make sure everyone knows there are simple changes they can make to drive smarter today. By simply changing how you drive, ensuring proper vehicle maintenance and using high-quality products, motorists can use fuels more efficiently, stretch their fuel purchases and make our energy resources go farther -- now that's Smarter Driving."

The Taylors are known worldwide for their Fuel Academy, whereby they travel the world educating motorists on ways to drive more effectively and efficiently.

"By setting out for another fuel economy record using practical tips, we're excited to show everyday motorists how they can become more fuel efficient drivers through the Shell Smarter Driving program," Helen Taylor said. "Since 1982, we've been educating others about how to drive more efficiently and how they can reduce their fuel consumption and maximize efficiency by using high-quality fuels such as Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines. We are confident that we'll set another record on this tour, while offering consumers easy tips to save money on the road and at the pump."

Following the Smarter Driving Tour kickoff in Los Angeles, the Taylors will drive throughout the 48 contiguous states before ending at the Las Vegas finish line later this month. Along their journey, the couple will record official stops at Shell stations to fill their tank and hold on-site consumer education activities, including tips to save money on fuel at Shell by leveraging grocer loyalty reward programs in select markets and using payment options that can offer significant discounts.
