Sheetz Selects Home for New Distribution

ALTOONA, Pa. -- What was a tale of two cities has now become a story of one with Sheetz Inc. choosing Burlington, N.C. as the location for its new distribution center.

On Tuesday night, the Burlington City Council unanimously approved an incentives request from Sheetz Distribution Services LLC for the manufacturing and distribution center. The approval gives the company an incentive package that could exceed $1 million, and includes running water and sewer lines to the location, according to The Times News.

With an initial building plan of 250,000 square feet, the proposed distribution center for Burlington is smaller than the retailer's nearest one in Claysburg, Pa., which has a 390,000-square-foot distribution center and adjacent 140,000-square-foot Sheetz Bros. Kitchen.

However, Executive Vice President of Sheetz Distribution Services Ray Ryan told local officials the Burlington center would be built to allow for future expansion. The company would hope to take occupancy by August 2014, the newspaper reported.

The timeline of the incentives agreement, said City Manager Harold Owen, includes a requirement of no fewer than 191 full-time positions, and no fewer than 250 by 2018. "Reimbursement is based on a five-year period of time," he added.

The incentive amount is 4 percent of the project's total investment, Owen said. The current estimated value of the distribution center is about $32 million. In the agreement, Burlington will also extend water and sewer lines to the area, and invest an additional $325,000 for onsite utility work, according to the report.

The company began to look for space for a second distribution center after making the move into south into North Carolina. It was reportedly also looking at Virginia, as CSNews Online previously reported.
