Seven-Eleven Japan Will Pay Overtime

TOKYO -- Seven-Eleven Japan Co. plans to compensate store managers for overtime beginning in March, according to a Japanese business publication, The Nikkei.

This comes after a ruling last month in which the Tokyo District Court ordered McDonald's Co. (Japan) to pay overtime to its store managers. Seven-Eleven Japan is the first among restaurant and retail businesses to follow suit since that decision, according to the report.

The new compensation will apply to Seven-Eleven Japan's approximate 500 store managers who will shift from a plan consisting mainly of base pay and a manager's allowance to a base pay and overtime; the allowance will be slashed and overtime will be tracked via work logs at each store, the report stated.

The Japanese convenience store operator, a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co.. has also set a goal of reducing the average monthly overtime worked by managers from the current 45 hours to 30, the business publication reported.
