Rutter's Opens Discovery Center For Children
YORK, Pa. -- The interactive Rutter's Discovery Center for Children at the York County Historical Society Museum was unveiled Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"As a third-generation family business, Rutter's treasures its history and the history of York County," Scott Hartman, president of Rutter's Farm Stores, said in a statement. "The Rutter's Discovery Center for Children will help educate generations of York County youths about their community's rich past. We're proud to be a part of something so worthwhile."
In addition to representatives from the Rutter's companies, York Mayor John Brenner, museum operator, the York County Heritage Trust, and York County schoolchildren also participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Rutter's Discovery Center for Children, located on the museum's second floor, features exhibits that display the period between 1890 and 1910, as seen through four categories -- school, work, home and leisure. Hands-on exhibits include two desks from a one-room schoolhouse, slates and slate pencils, abacuses, stereoscopes, a crank telephone, a crank washing machine, a rug beater and a butter churner.
Hartman's grandfather, George Rutter, and George's brother, Bud -- founders of Rutter Brothers Dairy -- were born during this period, according to the company.
"Thanks to the generosity of the Rutter's companies, the Heritage Trust is able to preserve and present to the public this important era in York County's and our nation's history," Jennifer Hall, curator of collections for the Heritage Trust, said in a statement. "We're grateful for this partnership with Rutter's."
