TULSA, Okla. — QuikTrip Corp. ranked No. 21 nationally in Glassdoor's seventh annual Employees' Choice Awards, which recognizes the best places to work according to employees, reported Tulsa World. The convenience store chain was chosen based on internal reputation, not outside nomination.
The winning companies were only considered if they had at least 50 approved employee reviews on www.Glassdoor.com, which lets current and former employees anonymously review companies and their management.
"The company itself did not apply for anything, so it was all employee driven," QuikTrip spokesman Michael Thornbrugh told the news outlet. "That's pretty cool, man."
As part of the Glassdoor survey, employees rate their overall satisfaction, along with factors such as work-life balance, compensation and benefits, and career advancement opportunities. Employees also share the benefits and downsides of working at the company and offer advice to senior management.
QuikTrip was lauded for its higher-than-average pay scale, which offers store managers $70,000 annually on average. Second assistant managers make around $45,000.
"For what you do, the pay is the highest that you will find anywhere," wrote one QuikTrip manager from Atlanta. "Your supervisors are actively interested in seeing you progress with the company and are giving you constant feedback in order to make sure that you move up at some point if you so choose to."
To be revered by employees, a company needs to challenge them while offering higher wages, great benefits and the chance for promotion, according to Thornbrugh. "Everybody is treated with respect; it really is a large family," he said. "The biggest thing is we're really great listeners."
QuikTrip, which employs more than 17,000 people at 711 stores, received nearly a quarter-million job applications last year.
Google topped this year's Glassdoor list for the first time after appearing at a lower rank for the previous six years.
