QuikTrip, Sheetz Among Top Millennial Workplaces

Second-annual list surveyed more than 88,000 Gen Y employees.

NATIONAL REPORT — Younger people interested in a job in the convenience store industry would do well to consider QuikTrip Corp. and Sheetz Inc. The two chains represent the c-store channel in Fortune magazine's second annual "100 Best Workplaces for Millennials" list. Tulsa, Okla.-based QuikTrip ranked No. 31 while Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz is ranked No. 35.

To determine the rankings, the magazine's research partners anonymously surveyed more than 88,000 millennials at more than 600 companies that have been certified as a Great Place to Work. Factors included the sincerity of managers' support for people's personal and professional lives; the transparency of communication; people's ability to be themselves at work and to invest in their lives outside work; and the meaning they get from their jobs, among other things.

Only QuikTrip made the inaugural list in 2015, but both QuikTrip and Sheetz were also named to Fortune's overall "100 Best Companies to Work For" list in March, as CSNews Online previously reported.

QuikTrip employees praised the company for cultivating a sense of camaraderie between coworkers and the way managers go out of their way to assist with employees' professional and personal issues they may struggle with.

"This job is unique because of the many opportunities QuikTrip offers to employees to grow and become a better person," said one millennial employee at QuikTrip.

Sheetz employees expressed appreciation for the chain's habit of cross-training across areas such as the cash register, sales floor and drive-thru kitchen, which keeps them from being trapped doing only a single set of tasks.

"It is still a family-run company, so they treat everyone like family," said a millennial Sheetz employee. "After every five years of service, they take all their employees to a get-away at a very nice resort, which includes a lot of nice planned activities. It is a super nice gesture to make their employees feel valued."
