QuikTrip Grows Footprint in South Carolina

ANDERSON, S.C. -- QuikTrip Corp. is further expanding its plans to grow its convenience store business in South Carolina. Just 10 months after confirming it had three Anderson County stores on the drawing board, the company now has doubled that count to six locations.

Of the original three locations, the Anderson County store on Clemson Boulevard near the S.C. 28 bypass is currently under construction. The other two, at Interstate 85 exits 21 and 34, have yet to get shovel to dirt, according to the IndependentMail.com.

As for the other three, the Tulsa, Okla.-based c-store operator has acquired the old Anderson Special Events property on E. Greenville Street. In addition, the county is reviewing plans for a fifth store on Pearman Dairy Road, and the company is reported to be inquiring about property in Pendleton, the report stated.

To date, financially speaking, QuikTrip has invested at least $2 million in the Clemson Boulevard store -- approximately $1.45 million for the land and $495,000 to build the store and gas canopy. Furthermore, county records show the company paid $1.7 million for the E. Greenville Street site in December and $1.1 million for the property at Interstate 85 exit 34.

Kenneth Cosgrove, president of Piedmont Petroleum Co. and the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores, told the news outlet that QuikTrip's interest in the “Upstate” is a testament to the area's strong economy.

In addition to the stores planned for Anderson County, QuikTrip is preparing to open four of its next generation gas stations and convenience stores in Spartanburg County by early 2012, as CSNews Online previously reported.

The stores will be some of QuikTrip's first in the state. The first site is located off Highway 9 at exit 75 on Interstate 85 and is scheduled to open in September; the second is at 121 Fairview Church Rd. at exit 77 off Interstate 85 and will open in October; the third is at 7114 Lone Oak Rd. near Hearon Circle and will open in late November; and the fourth is at 489 W. Main St. in downtown Spartanburg and will open in February, according to previous reports.
