People News: Wallis Cos. COO Dead at 43

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Mark Martinovich, COO of Wallis Cos., died Friday, March 20, 2009, following a diagnosis with melanoma on Jan. 30, 2009, according to a company press release. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. today at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 15808 Manchester Road in Ellisville, Mo. Memorials are requested in lieu of flowers.

"Mark was a mentor to so many of our employees", said Rachel Andreasson, vice president of organizational development for Wallis. "While we are heartbroken by Mark’s death, I am certain the leaders he groomed will continue his legacy by working together to achieve the shared vision of Wallis Cos. We will always remember the lessons he taught us."

Martinovich joined Wallis Cos. in 1994, following the purchase of 47 of Mobil’s assets in the greater St. Louis market. Prior to joining Wallis, Mark started his career at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Tulsa, Okla., according to the company.

In addition to the time and energy Martinovich put into Wallis Cos., he spent time with his wife Tami and their four children: Andrew, Aaron, Alex and Ashley. Among his survivors are his mother Kathleen Martinovich, three sisters, one brother, a sister in-law, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

As a leader in the convenience store industry, Martinovich was the immediate past president of Missouri Petroleum and Convenience Store Association and served on its board since 2000.

In other people news, Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores named Joe Stallings manager of corporate services. He will be responsible for managing the day-to-day facilities and mailroom services at the company.

Stallings has worked at Love’s for more than three years and most recently served as fuel inventory manager. He previously worked as a facilities assistant for America Online.

Additionally, Atlas Oil Co. hired C. Kirk Haggarty as executive vice president and CFO. Haggarty will oversee Atlas’ accounting, treasury and tax departments, as well as the company’s financial affairs.

Prior to joining Atlas, Haggarty was a founding partner, managing director and president of Donnelly Penman & Partners, where he led the firm’s delivery of investment banking and financial advisory services to the distribution and services industries.

Haggarty was also previously a vice president in the investment banking department of Raymond James & Associates Inc. Haggarty and his wife reside in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., with their six children.
