Paving Way for Stings in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. -- It will be easier for communities to conduct unannounced checks of convenience stores to make sure they' re not selling tobacco products to underage consumers under a bill Gov. Scott McCallum signed into law yesterday.
Local police departments had been required to contract through the Department of Health and Family Services to conduct the sting operations. They will no longer have to go through the state to do them, as long as they comply with standards established by the department to conduct unannounced checks.
The purpose of the bill is to reduce underage smoking and to identify retailers with track records of selling tobacco to minors.
