Open Pantry Offers Coupons to Offset Cigarette Tax Increase

MADISON, Wis. -- Open Pantry convenience stores in the state are handing out coupons to offset a Jan. 1 increase in the cigarette tax, local television station Channel 3000 reported.

The promotion offers Doyle Dollars, named after Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, to help smokers pay for the $1 per pack tax increase that went into effect at the start of the year, the report stated.

The promotion calls for $1 off any two packs of cigarettes through Jan. 31, according to the report.

Open Pantry senior vice president Jim Fiene told the television station he was surprised by the number of customers who didn't realize the tax hike took effect on Jan. 1.
