New $1 Coins Hit Registers

WASHINGTON -- Earlier this year, the United States Mint launched the Presidential $1 Coin Program -- a series of circulating $1 coins featuring former Presidents. Now, as part of the program, a new $1 coin featuring Thomas Jefferson will be released on Aug. 16.

The series began with the George Washington $1 Coin, which was put into circulation on Feb. 15, 2007. Other presidential coins followed in the order that the former presidents served.

In preparation for consumer demand, retailers and financial institutions began pre-ordering the Thomas Jefferson $1 Coins on Aug. 2.

The U.S. Mint anticipates brisk customer demand for the new coins, similar to the response seen with the George Washington and John Adams coins. Research commissioned by the U.S. Mint revealed that about half of Americans polled are interested in collecting the new Presidential $1 Coins.

The coin will be available in unmixed quantities until Sept. 13, 2007, the U.S. Mint stated.

Retailers can also order free informational and promotional materials that can be distributed to customers from the U.S. Mint. The materials are available free of charge at www.usmint.gov/$1coin.
