Missouri's Cigarette Tax Now lowest in U.S.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- South Carolina lawmakers overrode a veto by Gov. Mark Sanford and raised the state's tobacco tax, which had been the nation's lowest, from 7 cents per pack of cigarettes to 57 cents, according to a report in the Kansas City Star. Effective July 1, the increase is expected to raise nearly $125 million for the state's Medicaid program, according to the report.

Missouri, at 17 cents per pack, is now the lowest state tobacco tax, followed by Virginia at 30 cents. The national average is $1.34, and Rhode Island, at $3.46 per pack, has the highest tax, the report stated.
