Mandating Security
MILWAUKEE -- Retail stores that have had three or more police calls for criminal activities within the past year could be required to install digital security cameras and video recorders, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
An ordinance approved by the city's Public Safety Committee would mandate digital technology that provides color images, replacing analog security cameras and magnetic videotape recorders.
"I think it's an excellent idea," Ald. Robert Puente said. "I know there's some costs associated with it, but I think the rewards will be greater than the costs, especially as it pertains to apprehending these criminals from continuing to do other crimes."
Under the proposal, any retail establishment that has had three or more police calls for criminal activities within the past year would be required to install the equipment within 12 months. After the first year, stores that are identified as having problems would be given only 60 days to install a digital security camera.
"Tapes are used, reused and reused and they wear out," said Capt. Tim Burkee of the Milwaukee Police Department. "Digital images are far better."
The Common Council and Mayor Tom Barrett would have to approve the measure before it becomes law.
