Liberty Lines Up TransMontaigne

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Liberty Petroleum LLC, the Staunton, Va.-based upstart company founded by three petroleum distributors in the Mid-Atlantic market, has entered into a supply agreement with TransMontaigne Inc.

The deal, the second supply accord since Liberty started some two years ago, is significant as Liberty continues to expand its presence, currently positioned in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast portions of the United States.

"We're obviously very excited about this," Liberty President Blackie Bowen told CSNews Online at the National Association of Convenience Stores show in Orlando. Liberty, which also contracts with Energy Merchant, has grown to 75 stations with its resplendent patriotic image.

Three jobbers founded the organization in response to what they considered restrictive conditions imposed on them by their major oil brands. In addition to Bowen, who runs Ewing Oil Co., are Bill Holtzman of Holtzman Oil Co. and Frayser White of Virginia Oil Co.

Bowen said the agreement with TransMontaigne was inked in July and covers portions of the Southeastern market.

He also reported that the first 14 stations to convert from Big Oil to Liberty reported an average one-year gasoline volume increase of 54.3 percent and 19-percent in-store spike.
