Kum & Go Founder to Receive Business Leadership Award

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- The founder of the Kum & Go convenience chain, W. A. "Bill" Krause, will receive the Oscar C. Schmidt Iowa Business Leadership Award from the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business on Dec. 12, the Press-Citizen reported.

Krause founded the company in 1959, when he started selling milk, bread and eggs at a gas station and car wash, which was co-owned with his father-in-law, T.S. Gentle, in Hampton, Iowa. Additional stores were developed under the Kum & Go name, and today, Krause Gentle Corp. operates more than 450 Kum & Go stores with 3,600 employees in 13 states, according to the report.

Krause graduated from the University of Iowa in 1957 with a bachelor of arts in journalism. Today, he is a member of the Tippie College's Board of Visitors and the university's Presidents Club, the report stated.
