Kroger Customers and Associates Raise $9.4 Million for Salvation Army

CINCINNATI -- This past holiday season The Kroger Co. pledged its support to The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle campaign raising $9.4 million for the less fortunate.

"It is impressive how committed both our customers and employees are to this campaign as monies raised increases each year," Meghan Glynn, spokesperson for Kroger told CSNews Online.

The famous red kettles were placed in front of Kroger's family of stores in 31 states. Along with Salvation Army volunteers, kettle stations were staffed by Kroger associates. "When you hear the bells start ringing in mid-November, you know the holiday season is coming in full force," said Glynn. "What really resonates with customers and employees is that the money raised in each community stays in that community."

The total amount raised represents an increase of 16 percent over the $8.1 million raised last year, and contributed to the new record of $118 million raised by the Salvation Army overall. Approximately 83 cents of every dollar raised provides social services to those in need.

"Kroger is an essential retail partner for The Salvation Army and we appreciate the long-standing commitment the company has demonstrated to helping those in need," Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army said in a released statement. "We could not provide critical services to thousands of poor and underprivileged people in this country without the generous donations of time and money from Kroger customers and associates."
