Hiller's Snuffs Cigarette Sales
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Hiller's Markets will discontinue selling cigarettes at all seven of its stores, despite the fact CEO Jim Hiller admittedly "agonized over the decision. My personal beliefs are intertwined in my business ethos, and to continue to sell cigarettes runs contrary to my personal commitment to this community and its future."
Hiller said while he recognizes "that if you don't start somewhere, you can't impact the greater good at all ... There are all kinds of vices and unhealthy products for sale ... cigarettes aren't only dangerous to those who smoke them. The effects spread far beyond those who choose to smoke," and despite the right of those who choose to smoke, "I will not make Hiller's a fellow traveler."
Hiller's seven stores include a new 52,000-square-foot store in Union Lake along with others in Ann Arbor, West Bloomfield, Northville, Plymouth, Berkley and Commerce Township.
Other supermarket operators that have discontinued selling cigarettes include Wegmans and some New Jersey ShopRite stores.
