Green Zebra Begins Expansion of 'Healthy Convenience' Concept

Portland's Lloyd District store to open in early 2016.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Green Zebra Grocery will expand its "healthy convenience" concept with the opening of a second store in the Lloyd District of Portland. The news comes after the company successfully raised $2.5 million in capital to further its growth.

The new Green Zebra store will serve as the anchor tenant for Portland's "newest neighborhood," the development known as Hassalo on Eighth, according to the announcement. It will be located on Northeast Mulnomah Street between 7th and 9th Ave.

"We are thrilled to welcome Green Zebra to Hassalo on Eighth," stated John W. Chamberlain, president and CEO of American Assets Trust Inc. "Green Zebra is the perfect addition for our new development, and will quickly become a favorite shopping destination for the local residents and office workers in the Lloyd District."

The new, 8,200-square-foot Green Zebra Grocery is expected to open in early 2016. It will offer local produce, sustainable meat and seafood, a full deli and salad bar, beer and wine, everyday grocery items, a coffee and tea bar, and seating for lunch and dinner.

"We love the Lloyd neighborhood and we're super enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring healthy, local, organic foods to eaters in the neighborhood. In addition to serving the residents of Hassalo on Eighth and the Lloyd District, our small-format store will be convenient for our neighbors in Sullivan's Gulch, Irvington and the Central Eastside, as well as the thousands of folks who work in the neighborhood," said Green Zebra founder and CEO Lisa Sedlar. "It feels great to be part of the Lloyd District's transformation to a more vibrant, active, healthy, eco-neighborhood. We estimate that half of our eaters will get to our store by walking, biking or public transportation."

The original Green Zebra Grocery, located in Portland's Kenton neighborhood, opened in October 2013, as CSNews Online previously reported.

The company plans to open additional stores within the next two years. Its mission is to pioneer a new model of convenience store that offers fresh food, healthy products and delicious prepared foods cooked from scratch in the store.
