Golfing for Dollars

Williams TravelCenters, a business unit of The Williams Cos. Inc., raised a record $365,000 for Junior Achievement, a national education program created in 1919 to teach young adults business and economics, by sponsoring a golf tournament in Tennessee.

The Fourth Annual Williams TravelCenters Golf Classic on June 22 at Hermitage Golf Course in Nashville, Tenn., was the most profitable golf tournament ever for Junior Achievement nationally, said Dale Johnson, president of Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee.

The night before the golf tournament, which had 208 participants, money also was raised for Junior Achievement through a silent auction.

"Raising a record amount for Junior Achievement took a total team effort across our organization. I am extremely proud of employee efforts in helping such a wonderful and worthwhile organization," said Ike Mefford, president of Williams TravelCenters, which operates 60 units across the United States.

Tournament sponsors for the golf outing included Sprint Prepaid Cards, The Coca-Cola Co., Pepsico Inc., Mercedes Benz of Nashville and Pringles. More than 50 companies participated in this event.
