Giant Eagle Pushes Convenience
PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle Inc. is moving further into the convenience business with the opening of two gas stations with c-store kiosks under the name GetGo.
The new units, which will also sell fill-in grocery items, dairy products and cigarettes, are the result of a joint venture the Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain entered into last year with Belle Vernon, Pa.-based Guttman Enterprises, to manage its gas station operations. Guttman Enterprises operates 27 Crossroads convenience stores in Pennsylvania.
The first two GetGo locations -- one in Kennedy, Ohio and one in Canton, Ohio -- have been built next to existing grocery stores. The companies plan to continue their relationship by rebranding an unspecified number of the stand-alone Crossroads units to the GetGo brand.
"The joint venture will pursue new marketing and merchandising opportunities in the convenience store and fuels business," Giant Eagle said in a statement, adding that further details about the venture will be released at a later date.
With the new Ohio units, Giant Eagle now has 122 gas stations throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
