ExxonMobil Marks 10th Year Supporting Hispanic Youth Awards

IRVING, Texas -- ExxonMobil Corp. signed on for its 10th year of sponsoring the annual Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards, which honor America’s Latino students who excel in engineering and mathematics. The oil company has contributed more than $1.4 million in the years it has sponsored the awards.

"ExxonMobil sees it as an imperative to encourage and reward students who are excelling in the vital areas of math and science," Rex W. Tillerson, ExxonMobil chairman and CEO, stated. "We want to develop more engineers and scientists, and our partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards supports that goal. We are proud of our involvement in the awards and congratulate all of the winners."

The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards were created in 1998 by the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Hispanic high school seniors across the nation and promote them as role models for their peers.

This spring, the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation will honor regional winners in 12 cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, San Jose and Washington, D.C. Award recipients are graduating seniors who are chosen based on academic achievement, community service and an essay about the importance of their heritage.

One National Youth Award winner will be chosen from the regional winners in each category and will receive an additional educational grant, a laptop computer and a trip to the National Youth Award presentation in Washington, D.C.

To help address the nation’s math and science crisis, ExxonMobil also supports programs and organizations such as the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), which focuses on improvements in these areas from pre-school through higher education.
