ExxonMobil Gives $340,000 to Summer Jobs Program
DALLAS -- ExxonMobil recently kicked off the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP) in Texas. In its 36th year, the mutually beneficial program pairs 139 undergraduate college students with nonprofits here and in the Houston area.
Students are exposed to the world of nonprofits, gain experience and earn a paycheck with the program, while the nonprofit groups receive summer help. The company is supporting the program in both cities with grants totaling $340,000, which fund intern salaries and administrative expenses.
"Nonprofit organizations play a vital role in meeting the needs of Texas citizens, and the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program introduces young leaders to this calling of service through a fulfilling summer internship," Gerald McElvy, ExxonMobil Foundation president, said in a statement.
Receptions were held earlier this week to officially start the program. During the events, elected officials and community leaders spoke about the impact of nonprofits on local communities.
The 2007 ExxonMobil Community Champions also were announced. Two awards were given in Dallas and Houston to honor exceptional former CSJP interns who have gone on to establish full-time careers in the nonprofit sector:
-- Daniel Anderson, tomahawk district executive, Circle Ten Council: Boy Scouts of America, Dallas;
-- Jessica Johnson, volunteer service coordinator at BEAR in Houston;
-- Ashley Kurth, education coordinator, Dallas Symphony Association; and
-- Andrea Murray, curriculum and staff development manager at Reach Unlimited in Houston.
All four honorees received a crystal award in recognition of their work in the community.
The Volunteer Center of North Texas administers the program here and the Houston program is run by Volunteer Houston. Both groups help manage the internships and provide training on the recruiting, interviewing and selection process.
"We're proud to continue our partnership with ExxonMobil and the company's signature Community Summer Jobs Program," said Carrie Moffit, executive director of Volunteer Houston.
Interns come together though the eight-week program for development seminars, community service projects and networking opportunities.
Since the program began in 1971 in New York, ExxonMobil has given more than $7.7 million to nearly 3,700 community summer job internships in 10 states, including Alabama, Alaska, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming, and internationally, in Angola. This year, the company will provide more than $725,000 in grants to fund the programs nationwide.
