Exxon Sponsors Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- ExxonMobil joins the roster of Iditarod sponsors this week with a five-year commitment to the race, according to a report from ADN.com. The company’s $1.25 million pledge is on par with that of GCI and Anchorage Chrysler Dodge -- the two biggest in-state sponsors.

ExxonMobil has been involved in the famed dog sled race since 1978, but this year it made its biggest commitment ever, in part to expand the race’s educational program.

The program uses the 1,161-mile dog sled race as a tool for teaching history, geography, math and social studies. "For whatever reason, it seems to stimulate the learning process," said Iditarod executive director, Stan Hooley. "It is one of the most positive things we could be doing."

The eight- to 15-day race is set to begin in downtown Anchorage on March 7.
