Dallas 7-Elevens Help House Katrina Victims
DALLAS -- 7-Eleven stores throughout Dallas are selling Mardi Gras beads for $1 to raise funds for area Hurricane Katrina victims, with the goal of moving the victims out of shelters and into apartments, the Associated Press reported.
The campaign, proposed by Dallas Mayor Laura Miller, aims to raise $3 million in private donations to cover the first two months' rent for as many as 800 Katrina households. The fund is intended for families not already eligible for public housing assistance.
Miller said in the report that the city's not waiting for federal and state help to move Hurricane Katrina victims out of the city's shelters. The campaign already has received $250,000 in donations.
About 17,000 Katrina survivors from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were housed at Reunion Arena and the Dallas Convention Center as of Thursday.
