ChevronTexaco Downsizing

SEATTLE -- ChevronTexaco Inc. yesterday said it is selling 40 company-owned Chevron convenience stores and gas stations in Washington to independent buyers, who will continue operating the stations under the Chevron brand.

The stations, predominantly in the Puget Sound area, are the final Washington stores still owned by the company, said Marielle Boortz, a Chevron spokeswoman. Another 360 or so already are owned and operated by independent dealers, according to The Puget Sound Business Journal.

No buyers have been named, but negotiations are ongoing. Boortz said multiple buyers would be involved.

Chevron issued layoff notices -- effective Nov. 10 -- to about 308 workers at the sites, Boortz said. Those notices are required because those employees would no longer be Chevron staff if a sale goes through.
